Geek Chic Has Arrived
We’ve witnessed nerd culture invade our lives, from Silicon Valley innovations (Uber, Facebook, anyone?) to TV & film (hello Margot Tenenbaum and Stranger Things). Now, fashion joins the ranks.
Gucci’s 2016 spring show officially ushered in the geek chic trend, showcasing an eccentric 21st century girl who reached for fur lined loafers and yes —nerdy eyeglasses— to finish off her look. From high waisted pants to shirts buttoned all the way up, a nouveau nerd had emerged.
Whatever you call it – revenge of the nerds, geek chic, ugly pretty – fashion eyewear is a no-brainer way to embrace this eclectic trend.
Below are a few high/low options to rock this trend with designer frames and signature styles.
When a bespectacled Lupita Nyong’o walked onstage at last year’s Golden Globe sporting a pair of thick, black plastic frames, the glasses spawned their own Twitter account (@lupitasglasses) and an eveningwear/eyewear mash up. Pair yours with a tailored jacket or a printed jumpsuit and you’ll be set from desk to dinner and everywhere in between.
All Wired Up
Join the cool girls and make a spec statement with a pair of wire eyeglasses. Their lightweight nature makes them work on most face shapes, and they’ll add a retro, eccentric finish to any look.
Timeless Tortoise Shell
Tortoise shell glasses tick the geek chic box, but their speckled hue gives a softer feel. Whether you’re a girl boss topping off your LBD or a social butterfly channeling your inner luxe librarian, this is a look for the books.
