July 4th Guide: Best Places to See Fireworks in NYC

Cohens Fashion Optical - New York Fireworks - July 4th

What better place to see the pyrotechnics of Independence Day than high-energy, effervescent New York City? For an unforgettable 4th of July, consider this your go-to guide to NYC fireworks displays (as well as a few options on the Long Island shore for you beach lovers out there).

As New York’s fashion eyewear retailer since 1927, we at Cohen’s know a thing or two about our hometown holidays. Ever since Jack Cohen started selling glasses from a pushcart on the Lower East Side, we’ve been helping New Yorkers see our local spectacles better than ever. And now, check out our 2016 fireworks show picks (drum roll, please)….

Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks® Spectacular

It’s the 40th anniversary of America’s most popular fireworks show, so you can expect an extra-special extravaganza this year. The NYC fireworks show includes two fireworks displays starting at about 9:20 pm along the East River: one at the Brooklyn Bridge and another from 23rd to 37th Streets.

For incredible vistas, take a boat cruise on the river. Timed to take advantage of the gorgeous fireworks displays after dark, these cruises often include food, drinks, DJs, and dancing. For your NYC fireworks adventure, try Hornblower or Circle Line, both popular NYC cruise lines.

Alternately, stay on land for fireworks in NYC, and go to South Street Seaport for dinner and drinks—then amble over to the waterfront for prime fireworks views. Or choose a hotel, restaurant, or lounge with roof deck access to the 4th of July fireworks show; neighborhoods to consider are the East Village, SoHo, Gramercy Park, and Lower East Side. And don’t forget Brooklyn: Head to Brooklyn Bridge Park in Dumbo, or try a rooftop bar such as Berry Park in Greenpoint to get the best view of local fireworks.

Jersey City and Statue of Liberty Fireworks

The lower West Side of Manhattan can enjoy a good fireworks show too, as the sky will light up around the Statue of Liberty and in front of the Colgate Clock and Goldman Sachs building at around 9:30 pm. Again, a sightseeing cruise is a great option for avoiding the crowds at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. Or find a rooftop bar, restaurant, or hotel in Battery Park or Tribeca to view the fireworks display.

A Shore Thing: Beach Fireworks

If the holiday weekend finds you at the beach, you’re in luck with plenty of options for coastal firework shows. Make it a picnic on the beach or take a boat cruise at Jones Beach (2016 marks this spot’s first fireworks show since 2009), or head to Montauk’s Umbrella Beach for the Stars over Montauk Fireworks display. Other fireworks hot spots include the Sag Harbor Yacht Club’s fireworks show (have a picnic on Havens Beach) and the Devon Yacht Club in Amagansett (try setting up your beach chairs at Fresh Pond Beach, arriving early to snag a picnic table and BBQ grill).

Before you make any brilliant July 4 plans, head to your local Cohen’s for an eye exam or fashion fitting: Visit our homepage or find a store near you. Take care of your eyes in style—then go enjoy the Independence Day show. Happy Birthday, America!
