Specialty Contact Lenses

Specialty lenses provide personalized solutions to help correct vision for a wide range of conditions. These types of lenses are specially designed to correct specific conditions such as presbyopia or astigmatism. You can even get colored contact lenses that can completely change your eye color. If you are looking for the most custom vision correction available your optometrist can help pair you with the right type of specialty lenses.

Specialty contact lenses are available as both soft contact lenses and Rigid gas permeable lenses making it easy to find one that is most comfortable to wear while offering the maximum amount of vision correction available. They usually require more thorough examination and fittings to make sure they fit
comfortably while correcting visual errors.

Specialty vs. Regular Lenses

Regular lenses come in standard sizes and powers and do not require as thorough of an evaluation and fitting. This means that they can be prepared quicker but they may not treat all types of eye conditions as effectively. Those who use regular contact lenses also find that they are quicker and easier to adapt to because they are generally more comfortable.

Specialty lenses offer better vision correction but this also will come at a higher cost than regular contact lenses. Overall, specialty lenses are ideal for those who have more extreme refractive errors but for many, regular lenses may be enough.

Specialty Lenses For Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a condition that makes it difficult to see things clearly within reading distance and far away. Affecting nearly 90% of people over the age of 45, presbyopia is a common condition in most adults. Thankfully, it can be corrected with specialty contact lenses that offer zones for both nearby and distant vision. These contact lenses can be made as either bifocal or multifocal.

Multifocal lenses

Multifocal lenses come with multiple powers that offer varying vision correction for all different distances.

Bifocal lenses

Bifocal lenses have two specific vision powers for either long distance or short distance. The wearer needs to look through one of these two zones based on what they are trying to focus on.

Specialty Lenses for Astigmatism

Astigmatism can be either regular or irregular and can be corrected with soft or rigid lenses respectively. For astigmatism, toric lenses are a special form of contacts that come in a different shape. The shape of toric contact lenses creates different refractive, or focusing, powers on the vertical and horizontal orientations. The refractive strength increases or decreases gradually as you move around the lens.
